This album is rooted in the sonic essence of Balinese gamelan, using the language of flowers to convey the meaning of each piece. The compositions blend diverse popular music styles, including jazz, blues, and soft rock, while deliberately preserving the distinct characteristics of gamelan music, such as “In Pairs,” “Kotekan,” and “Microtonal Differences.” Every track goes beyond mere exoticism and showcases intricate instrumentation that creates irreplaceable and intriguing musical expressions and unique soundscapes rich in imagery and storytelling.

  • “Be Happier” : This piece is so light, simple but has a profound meaning…You have heard that sound before, right? Perhaps on a small island eight degrees south of the equator; on the road to the Eiffel Tower in 1889; in ancient temples, villages, or courtyards; or in a jazz bar somewhere in the south. That sound—primal, distant, and crystalline—is like happiness itself: intuitive and pure. Be happier! GAMELAN!

  • “Doing Nothing” – This piece ingeniously employs both of Bali’s primary gamelan scales, Pelog and Slendro, to create a blooming sonic landscape reminiscent of frangipani across different times and spaces. By combining gamelan metallophones (Kantilan and Gangsa), which follow different scales and typically do not play together, with instruments such as the Chinese Sheng, electric piano, jazz drums, and electric bass, this track produces a unique sound and an instantly memorable melody.
  • “A Brief but Beautiful Encounter” – This composition reflects the meeting between Balinese gamelan and Western musicians at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, which sparked wonderful artistic creations. Simultaneously, it evokes the beautiful encounters and dancing moments between people in a dimly lit jazz bar where melodies sway unrestrained. Mirroring the symbolic meaning of rosemary, this piece captures the longing to hold onto cherished memories through music.

Album:Gamelan Flowers

<Be Happier>,

<A brief but beautiful encounter>,
